Leapreaders to the rescue!
Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, things looked a lot differently than they do today, am I right?
Okay, that’s probably the understatement of the year, but you get what I’m saying. When I was a kid (oh my goodness, did I just say that? At least it wasn’t, “back in my day…”), I was listening to NKOTB on my walkman, playing the original Super Mario Brothers on Nintendo, winning skip-it and rocking a mean side-pony.
Kids now? Screens, screens, screens, screens, screens.
Every parent I’ve talked to is having the same issue. The kids would rather be inside with an iPad or a TV show than playing outside. If there’s a kid at the playground with a phone or tablet, the kids flock to them. Now don’t get me wrong, I ABSOLUTELY think there are benefits to having our kids play with all kinds of technologies. I think screen time is a lifesaver when used in moderation (how else do parents take showers?!), but I have found myself looking for an alternative that is both educationally stimulating and piques their interest.
Enter: The Leapfrog Leapreader.
Do you remember books on tape? I remember listening to them over and over and over while leafing through the pages of my favorite books (particularly “Beauty and the Beast”). This is kind of like that. Basically you buy the books that go with the pen (our kids love the “Cars” ones, “Paw Patrol”, “Monsters Inc” and many of the other Disney ones), download the stories onto the pen, and then when you tap the pen to the pages, it reads the story aloud. Simple as that. In addition to the story, a lot of the books also come with games so you can play “I spy” or different matching games with the things that are on the pages.
These books have been an absolute lifesaver during naptime, on flights and on long car trips. Our oldest started using them when he was about 3 years old and still loves them today. Leapreader Pens are so good that we own 3. Go get one for your kiddo or add it to a “wish list” for the next birthday. You won’t regret it.
