Brooks' Banana Bread From Scratch

Let me preface this by saying the following: I am NOT a baker. I love baked goods and sweets, but I’m not the kinda gal who is going to actually sift my flour. Sorry, Martha.

Having said that, when I can muster up the energy I do enjoy baking with my kids. This winter we’ve really felt the pain of not being able to get outside as much as we’d like, so baking something together is a great way to make an afternoon more tolerable. 

I usually know that it’s baking time when the tattling won’t stop or every little movement that is made is followed by a whiney “Mom, he’s annoying me”. That, or when they’re literally running laps around our Brooklyn-sized apartment. 

Their involvement may not exactly make things easier (we’re the epitome of that “too many cooks” saying), but they do love being able to contribute.

Brooks and I decided to make chocolate chip banana bread from scratch one random morning a few weeks ago and this recipe is on point.  I found the original recipe over at


½ cup butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
3 bananas, mashed
1 ½ cups flour
½ cup chocolate chips
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp vanilla

Steps to awesomeness

  • Preheat oven to 350º
  • Combine butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs and mashed bananas.
  • Stir.
  • Add flour, soda and salt. 
  • Add vanilla.
  • Mix until combined. Do not overmix.
  • Pour into greased and floured loaf pan.
  • Bake for 55 minutes.
